For the past one year many Indian TV channels have been telecasting talent shows being telecasted throughout the country. Talent or "Hunar" as they choose to call it in some recent shows is being called anything that is entertaining and can leave you gasping with your jaws wide open. But may be thats just in theory and not in pratice...
As far as my sight goes there are 2 things that we need to consider. The first is the word risk while the other is decision. Lets look at these issues one at a time. Risk would mean that people from all parts of the country are coming forward to participate are being given a fair chance and put in thier best to clear each level. Some have a magical voice which has been harnessed over many years while others can pass swords through thier body. The most astonishing amongst all these was a performance where the participant was able to lift a couple of bricks bound together by a rope with a mere eye!!
So much so that even one of the judges could not see this part and covered her eyes by the 'pallu'of her saree. The guy was talented for sure but was it entertaining ? wasn't there too much risk involved!! What if this would have resulted in an on stage disaster
The second is the decision. Having said that the process of selection and shortlisting after a certain level is completely in the hands of the audience. It is the votes of the 'Hindustan ki Janta' that matter in taking the talent to the next level. In a group of 10 people only 2 are selected and as we say in statistics in sampling distributions, there are random and stratified sampling. Agreeing to the fact that the competition is very high we need to select the best of each sub group unilke the situation now where even if all 1o in the group are much better than the other 10, clearly the deserving dont get to the next level.
While these are probably flaws with the game, there is something that the audience needs to ask themselves. Are they voting for talent or for people belonging to thier regions. Once we speak of talent its clear that someone who can lift bricks with one eye is much more talented than a group that can do 'bhangra with coordination' and then invite the judges to dance with them on stage. Yet, the bhangra group is voted for and reach the finals...and yet its called a talent show with 'Hunar hi winner' whereas i think it should be called 'punjab hi winner'.
Lets take a moment to decide together whom to vote for keeping in mind we are 'Hindustanis' and not just people from our region and that we need to vote for talent and not for a state or its representative to win. If we do this we will do good on two aspects
The right guy will win and we will be more united as India, which is what we need more than just being our own state.
